Crazy Hair Day Literacy Campaign| Overview

The First Official Crazy Hair Day event took place in San Diego, California, in the spring of 2004. Numerous community organizations came together with the Children’s Museum to host this regional literacy campaign and collaborative civic celebration designed to promote the joy of reading and build community based on the book Crazy Hair Day by Barney Saltzberg.

In 2004, More than 500 books donated by Starbucks Coffee Company were read by more than 500 volunteer and celebrity readers to more than 8,000 children and adults in more than 120 locations in San Diego.

In 2005, More than 1500 books donated by Starbucks Coffee Company will be read by more than 1500 volunteer and celebrity readers to more than 30,000 children and adults in more than 300 locations in New Orleans, Denver, San Diego, and New York through regional children’s museums.

In 2006, More than 2500 books will be donated, distributed, and read by more than 2500 volunteers to more than 50,000 children and adults in more than 500 locations in more than 10 cities throughout the US.
